Why Shading Can Make
Solar a Bad Investment

Heavily shaded roof with limited direct sunlight

Solar panels need direct sunlight to produce electricity. If your roof is heavily shaded by trees, nearby buildings, or other obstacles, a solar system may not generate enough energy to justify the investment.

Modern systems with microinverters or optimizers perform better in partial shade, but they can't create energy where there is no sunlight.

When Solar May Not Be Worth It

Heavy shading can:

In some cases, the system may never pay for itself.

Our Approach

At Solar Engineering LLC, we don't believe solar is the right solution for every home. Before making a recommendation, we evaluate your roof's orientation, shading, and expected annual production using professional design software.

The examples below show the difference shading can make.

Poor CandidateHeavily shaded throughout the day — low energy production
Ideal CandidateExcellent sun exposure — strong production & return on investment

The first roof is heavily shaded throughout the day, making solar panels a poor investment due to low energy production. The second roof has excellent sun exposure and is an ideal candidate for a solar installation, allowing the system to generate significantly more electricity and provide a much better return on investment.

Our promise: if we determine that your roof receives too much shade, we'll tell you honestly — even if it means not making a sale.

Our goal is to recommend solutions that provide real value, not just sell solar panels.
